The objectives of this work package are:

  • To develop a universal decision tool for measures and processes for energy efficient removal of micropollutants
  • To fill reserach gaps in preventing the the formation of toxic by-products and the assessment of toxic transformation products from micropollutants; additional lab and field experiments with the selected technologies and the various source water compositions (water resources, waste water effluents) will be conducted to foster the uptake of these technologies

The following tasks (with deliverables and milestones) are planned:

T3.2.1: Compilation of kinetics and mechanisms for the oxidative transformations

A compilation and evaluation of kinetics and mechanisms for the transformation of organic substances will be completed in August 2014, based on literature and laboratory batch experiments with different oxidants and matrices.

T3.2.2: Formation of oxidation by-products and transformation products

The formation of oxidation by-products and transformation products for various source water compositions and oxidative treatment technologies and their subsequent elimination during biological post-filtration processes will be evaluated. A report on the chemical and toxicological transformation product formation is expected in April 2015.

T3.2.3: Decision basis for implementation of oxidation technologies

Site-specific conditions in different European regions for requirements of advanced treatment will be evaluated, and a cost-efficient, practicable and meaningful monitoring concept for the evaluation of the elimination efficiency on the basis of indicator compounds will be developed. A report on the decision basis will be published in August 2015.
