Check dams are in-channel modifications which are temporarily or permanently constructed dams built across stream channels to retain part of the stream discharge and enhance groundwater recharge. Check dams are often found in non-perennial streams. A release weir enables the discharge of ponded water in times of low infiltration and high evaporation in order to enhance infiltration downstream.
