Riverbed scarification is a method for enhancing recharge extending the area through which infiltration takes place. The impermeable layer sedimented in the top of the riverbed is periodically removed to facilitate the recharge through the alluvial materials.
This has been practised in the Llobregat aquifer in Barcelona for many decades. In this case in Barcelona, the riverbed is fully clogged under normal flow conditions. Mechanical scarification of the riverbed is conducted when flow conditions allow the removal of this clogging layer.
